English lightweight and five-time UFC veteran John Maguire (18-6) has signed with Cage Warriors Fighting Championship.
Cage Warriors officials today announced the five-fight deal, adding that “The One” will debut for the promotion against an opponent yet to be named at Cage Warriors 63, which takes place Dec. 31 at The Helix in Dublin, Ireland.
“I’m really happy to be joining Cage Warriors,” Maguire said in an official release. “I think it’s the best promotion in Europe, and that’s where I need to be. It has the best lightweight roster around, and I’m here to clear it up.
“Make no mistake; I’m here for one reason and one reason only – to be the best. Gypsy jiu-jitsu is coming to Cage Warriors.”
The 30-year-old Maguire began his career in 2006 as a middleweight before dropping to 170 pounds in 2010.
A self-described master of “Gypsy jiu-jitsu,” Maguire made his UFC debut at 2011′s UFC 138 event, where he earned a unanimous-decision win over Justin Edwards. He returned in April 2012, scoring the “Submission of the Night” bonus at UFC on FUEL TV 2 by tapping out DaMarques Johnson.
It was Maguire’s final UFC win, as he wound up losing three consecutive fights to John Hathaway, Matthew Riddle and, in Maguire’s lightweight debut, Mitch Clarke.
Still, Cage Warriors CEO Graham Boylan believes Maguire still has plenty left to offer in the cage.
“John Maguire is a hugely talented fighter and one of the very best in Europe,” Boylan stated. “That’s why he’ll feel at home at Cage Warriors, where there’ll be plenty of big fights for him to keep his career moving in the right direction.”
