Jason Quigley: First Irishman to win a silver medal at the World ChampionshipsIreland’s Jason Quigley was forced to settle for a silver medal at the World Championships after losing on points to home favourite Zhanibek Alimkhanuly in the middleweight final in Kazakhstan.

The 22-year-old from County Donegal was sent tumbling to the canvas in the first round and failed to recover with two of the three judges scoring the contest 30-27 in favour of Alimkhanuly.

Despite the defeat, Quigley becomes the first Irishman to win a silver medal at the event.

He booked his place in the final with a stunning win over Russia’s Artem Chebotarev on Friday, while Alimkhanuly came into the gold medal showdown fresh following a walkover win over England’s Anthony Fowler, who suffered a hand injury.

The rest certainly benefit the home fighter, who lit up a cagey start to the bout with a slick left cross out of nowhere to put Quigley on the floor.

Quigley regrouped well but all three judges scored the round 10-9 to Alimkhanuly, leaving the Irishman with work to do.

He came out roaring in round two and both boxers unleashed a flurry of shots on each other.

The Kazak shook Quigley with another crisp left and all three judges once again scored the round in his favour.

Fatigue set in during the final round and although Quigley gave it everything, he could not land a knockout blow on the rock-solid Alimkhanuly.
