Don Charles insists heavyweight Dereck Chisora is improving with every fight Don Charles insists heavyweight Dereck Chisora is improving with every fight

Dereck Chisora’s trainer has issued a warning to the rest of the boxers in the heavyweight division by insisting the big-punching Finchley fighter is nowhere near his best.

Chisora has won all three of his fights this year inside the distance and forced a fourth round stoppage of German Edmund Gerber on his last outing to claim the vacant European title in September.

Ahead of his first European defence against unbeaten Italian Matteo Modugno on his Copper Box return on November 30, Chisora’s trainer and long-term mentor Don Charles insisted there is much more to come from the 29-year-old.

“Dereck is a work in progress and there’s so much more to come from him I believe,” Charles told Sky Sports. “In terms of improvement, I would say he is at 60% at the moment so there’s another 40% of improvement.

“Now we might never reach 100 – maybe no fighter maybe ever reaches 100% performance in their career – but we’re going to come near it in the next 3/4 years I believe.

“People have not seen the best of Chisora.”

Charles is delighted with how much the Finchley heavyweight has accomplished in his relatively short career so far.

“After 22 fights Derek is only halfway through his career and I’m really excited because the best is yet to come and look at what he’s already done achieved without even winning a world title,” he said.

“He has worldwide popularity and made some decent money. He’s probably the first British boxer to make that amount of money without even wearing the world title belt around his waist.

“He’s already become a British and Commonwealth champion. He’s the holder of the European title and he’s fought for the WBC title.

“There isn’t a title this kid hasn’t fought for. He’s the current WBO International Title holder so he really has achieved a lot.”

Charles believes his fighter has the right people around him and revealed his optimism regarding the heavyweight’s future as Chisora looks to put himself in line for a shot at one of the Klitschko brothers in 2014.

“I’m really excited particularly because he’s now taking care of his eating habits,” he said “Derek is a guy on a mission. He’s trimmed down, he’s training hard and he’s as sharp as ever.

“He’s keeping active and busy and he’s got at least another 3 or 4 years and 15/ or 16 fights to go in his career. Luckily Frank Warren is providing the fights and Dereck really is a promoter’s dream.

“As European champion he’s got a brilliant platform to spring off and he’s now at the level to challenge for bigger things.

“Me and Dereck have come from a long way and we’ve got a long way to go.”
