FORT CAMPBELL – Alexis Davis’ aggression was the deciding factor in a bout with Liz Carmouche.
Over three rounds, the Canadian chased down the onetime title challenger and punished her with punches and leg kicks.
The women’s bantamweight bout was the co-main event of today’s UFC Fight Night 31 event at Fort Campbell in Kentucky. It aired on FOX Sports 1 following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and MMAjunkie.com.
The dividends from Davis’ leg attacks showed early in the fight when Carmouche shook out her right leg after a particularly hard strike landed. As the fight wore on, she increasingly switched stances and even lifted her leg to avoid more damage from Davis, who continued to target the affected area.
Carmouche spent much of the fight attempting to hit and run against her more aggressive foe, and frequently landed looping hooks as Davis cornered her against the cage. One two-punch combination in the second frame opened a sizable cut over Davis’ left eye, but the bloody gash wasn’t enough to deter her advance.
An early dose of clinching gave way to more chasing from Davis as the fight entered the third round. Carmouche continued to land counters, but was unable to generate the same amount of power with less solid footing.
The judges’ final scores were unanimous in favor of Davis, who took home two scores of 30-27 and a 29-28 tally.
After a decision over Rosi Sexon in her debut, Davis (15-5 MMA, 2-0 UFC) now boasts back-to-back UFC wins, while Carmouche (9-4 MMA, 1-2 UFC), who was submitted by bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey in her debut, goes back to the drawing board after a second round TKO of Jessica Andrade.
